Just as they did four years ago, the Giants prevailed in the final minute against the Patriots, beating New England, 21-17 and giving the franchise its fourth Super Bowl championship — one more than the Patriots — and its second in four years over this generation’s greatest coach-quarterback combination, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

The Giants are an improbable champion in an improbable season, one that nearly did not begin because of a lockout, and ended with their becoming the first 9-7 team in N.F.L. history to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

For the Patriots, who were 13-3 in the regular season, it was another bitter loss, a devastating repeat of the defeat that ended their undefeated 2007 season. They have won three titles, but none since the 2004 season, casting their dynasty into the distance while the Giants are the only repeat champions of the last five years.

“I thought four years ago was exciting,” the team co-owner Steve Tisch said. “That was a dress rehearsal.”

The victory came, fittingly for a season with so many strange twists, in the oddest fashion. Trailing by 2 points with 3 minutes 46 seconds remaining, the Giants started the winning drive. Manning — who now has one more championship than his brother Peyton — lofted a perfect pass down the left sideline to Mario Manningham, who kept his feet inbounds by inches with two defenders on his back. The pass went for 38 yards, a pointed answer to the yearlong question of whether Eli was an elite player.

With a minute remaining, running back Ahmad Bradshaw rushed through a wide-open hole — the Patriots were instructed to let him score — and tried to fall down. That would have limited the Patriots’ time to mount a comeback of their own.

But his momentum carried him into the end zone, the 6-yard touchdown run giving the Giants a 4-point lead with 57 seconds left. The Giants barely celebrated because they knew that meant Brady had nearly a minute and one timeout to score a touchdown.

The Giants’ defense, maligned early in the season after being decimated by injuries during training camp, had pulled itself together for critical wins in the final weeks of the season against the Jets and the Dallas Cowboys, then for the playoff run. And starting with 57 seconds left, they thwarted Brady one last time, pressuring him and forcing incompletions, dropped passes, and finally, on a desperation heave into the end zone in the final seconds, a pass the fell harmlessly to the ground.

The Giants co-owner John Mara said he held his breath. Coach Tom Coughlin, whose job status was questioned for much of the season, said he could not scream loud enough to knock down the pass. When it finally fell, and the blue and red confetti rained down on the field, Coughlin had won as many championships as his mentor, Bill Parcells, the former Giants coach who won the franchise’s first two Super Bowls.

“You know what, I felt pretty good about our team the whole time,” Coughlin said of the season. “I knew there was stuff going on on the outside. You lose a game in New York and you’re fired. Burned at the stake.”

This victory should buy him a little breathing room. The Giants were rarely dominant this season, but they were often indomitable, led by Manning. He completed 30 of 40 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown, and was named the game’s most valuable player for the second time.

The Patriots’ offense suffered with the star tight end Rob Gronkowski seemingly at less than full strength after injuring his left ankle two weeks ago. Gronkowski, who had the most productive season by a tight end in N.F.L. history, was held to two catches for 26 yards.

The Giants controlled most of the first half, looking sharper and more focused than the gaffe-laden Patriots did. “There were 100 plays you could be talking about, and I would take a lot of them,” Belichick said when asked what plays the Patriots could have executed better.

But it was a mistake by the Giants that ended their momentum. With Manning driving them again midway through the second quarter, guard Kevin Boothe was called for holding, negating a first down and effectively ending the drive.

That put the ball in Brady’s hands with 4:03 left before halftime. The Patriots deferred the opening kickoff the way they usually do because they crave the opportunity to double up an opponent: to score on the final drive of the first half, then again on the first drive of the second.

In this case, the Patriots got a significant assist from the Giants, who decided to play deep, taking away the big play but allowing an accurate Brady to chew up the field. The Patriots’ drive began on the 4 and was pushed back another 2 yards on a holding call.

“Obviously not the finish I wanted,” said Stanley, who played the final nine holes of regulation in five over par to close with a 74. After both golfers birdied the first extra hole, Stanley missed a par putt that would have extended the playoff.


He was asked how he deals with the emotions of what happened. Stanley’s chin quivered and he pinched back the tears. Before the first words were out of his mouth, he had given a complete answer.

“I don’t know right now,” he said. “It’s tough. I mean, it’s really tough to take.”

When Stanley looks back on this round, his second-guessing will start with his decision-making on the 18th hole. After his drive, he had 237 yards to the pin and chose to lay up instead of going for the green. He placed his second shot in the fairway, but his third shot spun off the green and into the water. After taking a drop, Stanley took three putts from 43 feet for a triple-bogey 8 to fall into the playoff with Snedeker, who closed with a 67 for a 16-under 272.

“Looking back, I don’t really know what I was thinking,” he said. “It’s not a hard golf hole. It’s really a pretty straightforward par 5. I could probably play it a thousand times and never make an 8.”

If anybody could relate to Stanley’s public display of disappointment it was Snedeker, who buried his face in a towel and cried in his post-round news conference after shooting a 77 in the final round of the 2008 Masters to finish tied for third. At the time, Snedeker said he grew emotional “because I came so close to living out one of my dreams and I wasn’t able to do it.”

On Sunday, Snedeker said: “You never want to see anybody go through that. I don’t care who it is, not even your worst enemy on the planet. Golf is such a funny game, and to have that kind of lead coming into the last hole and not to win is tough. It will be a tough night for him. But he’s an unbelievably talented player, and the sky’s the limit for him. And I hope he does not beat himself up too much over this. He should learn from it. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s contending again soon.”

At a meeting of coaches and seniors the day after a loss, Blakeney determined that the Trojans had to win the rest of their games to secure their league title. Blakeney recalled that Tynes adjourned the session by slapping the table, declared that the coach clearly stated the mission and walked out of the room.

“Tough as a nickel steak,” Blakeney said of Tynes.

Tynes has stayed in touch, returning to Troy last year to fire off zingers at a roast for Blakeney attended by more than two dozen former players.

Umenyiora, a work in progress as a signee when he was barely 17, was redshirted, then had two undistinguished seasons as an interior defensive lineman. He was transformed as a junior, when he was moved to defensive end, becoming a standout on the field and a leader in the locker room.

Umenyiora received minimal interest from N.F.L. scouts before the draft in 2003. That was why the strength coach Richard Shaughnessy, the university’s liaison to N.F.L. teams, got a shock while watching the draft with the staff; the Giants selected Umenyiora in the second round.

“I was floored,” he said.

Unlike Tynes and Umenyiora, Jernigan was avidly pursued by several colleges. “When he signed, it was a party over there,” McKnight said.

A high school quarterback, Jernigan was converted to receiver at Troy, but he remained versatile.

“We tried to give him the ball every way you possibly could,” said Shayne Wasden, the receivers and special teams coach.

The play sheet included a column titled “Jerrel Plays.” As a senior, Jernigan threw 7 passes and caught 84, rushed 45 times — mostly out of the Wildcat formation — and returned 23 punts and 25 kickoffs.

“We didn’t use him enough,” Edenfield said.

Jernigan arrived at Troy as a 165-pound freshman who was flattened at his first contact practice. He tracked down Shaughnessy with a request: “I need to get bigger.” He did, by about 25 pounds, and became a third-round pick in part because of his grit.

The Troy-to-N.F.L. pipeline seems poised to continue, with offensive tackle James Brown expected to be drafted this year. There is plenty of space on the walls of the Trojans’ recruiting lounge for another Giants jersey.

BUFFALO, NY - The 2012 Buffalo Bulls baseball schedule was released with a slate that sees the young Bulls squad traveling for the first 17 games of the season and two new opponents featured on the schedule. It also includes 11 games against Big Four rivals and road dates against members of the Big East, SEC and Atlantic 10.

The season kicks off Feb. 24 at Cliff Hagan Stadium when Buffalo faces Kentucky. The Wildcats return its top pitcher and three of its top four hitters from 2011, when it finished 25-30 overall. After a three-game series, the team will head an hour to the east for four games against Morehead State. The Eagles are led by third baseman Andrew Deeds, who batted .380 with 49 runs batted in and 29 extra-base hits.

A weekend series against Coppin State and Long Island will take up the weekend of Mar. 10. On Saturday, the Bulls take on the host Eagles, before facing the Long Island Blackbirds. The game against LIU will feature a matchup of two of the top mid-major catching prospects in the country, as Tom Murphy will square off against senior Tyler Jones. After posting a batting average of .425 and starting in all 51 of the team's games, Jones was named to the All-Northeast Conference First Team and American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region First Team.

The team will have its first mid-week games starting on Mar. 13, with single games on back-to-back days against Towson and UMBC. Towson finished 26-28-1 last season while the UMBC Retrievers went 10-37. That weekend, the Bulls head to the City of Brotherly Love for three games against the Big Five at Villanova Ballpark. UB starts against LaSalle on Friday, taking on an Explorers team that has a solid starting rotation and a squad that finished 2011 with 28 wins. The following day, the team will take on another Atlantic 10 foe in the Saint Joseph's Hawks. The Hawks have a pitching staff that posted a 4.44 team earned run average and junior infielder Greg Kumpel, who batted .384 with 32 runs batted in. Finally, on Sunday, Buffalo will face host Villanova on Sunday in a tough test against a quality Big East foe.

Now with the major portion of the non-conference season behind it, UB will being Mid-American Conference slate with three games against Central Michigan starting March 23. The Chippewas won the West Division last season with a 17-9 conference mark and return top hitter Tyler Hall and a pitching staff that had a sub-4.00 team ERA last season. The following Wednesday, UB opens Big 4 action with a game at Canisius before coming to Amherst Audubon for the home opener.

Buffalo open's its home schedule in a big way, with nine home games in 20 days starting with Western Michigan on the weekend of March 30. Then on the following Tueday, it travels down for a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure before facing the 2011 MAC regular season and tournament champion Kent State. The Golden Flashes finished last season with a #26 ranking nationally and a spot in the NCAA regional final for the second time ever. There will then be a six-games-in-seven-days stretch where the Bulls face Canisius (April 10, April 18) and Niagara (April 17) at home along with a weekend series against Akron (April 13-15).

After traveling to Ohio to face the Bobcats on the weekend of April 20, the Bulls will face Miami at home on April 27-29 before taking its final road trip of the regular season with two games at Niagara and three games at Toledo (May 4-6). The Bulls will close out the season with some home cooking, with eight straight home games. Eastern Michigan (May 11-13) and Bowling Green (May 17-19) will end the conference schedule, with a final doubleheader against the Bonnies on May 15 also thrown in.
